Timminco unit fires up output of solar silicon

Becancour Silicon Inc. (BSI), a subsidiary of Timminco Ltd., Toronto, has started production of solar-grade silicon metal on the first of three production lines at its new plant in Becancour, Quebec.
Once it gets all three lines working it will need to add more capacity to fill all the orders it has already accepted for the high-purity metal used to make photovoltaic cells in solar panels.
BSI is on track to start up the remaining lines during the first quarter of next year, according to Robert J. Dietrich, Timminco executive vice president and chief financial officer. Each line has the capacity to produce 1,200 tonnes of solar silicon per year.....
