Higher refunds spur Calif. UBC recycling rate

The 1- and 2-cent increases in California's container redemption fees at the start of this year spurred the state's beverage drinkers to turn in more aluminum used beverage cans (UBCs) and plastic bottles.
Higher refunds for empty beverage containers helped push California's container recycling rate to 71 percent in the first six months of this year from 65 percent in the same period a year earlier, according to a report by the state's Department of Conservation. Starting Jan. 1, consumers have received a refund of 5 cents for each beverage container less than 24 ounces, up from 4 cents previously, while the refund for containers....
