Toyota poised to take world No. 1 spot from GM [UPDATE]

Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's largest automaker, appears poised to unseat General Motors Corp. as the world's biggest-selling automaker in what could be another big hit to the brand image of the U.S. auto industry.
But while losing the No. 1 position might have symbolic importance, it will have little material effect on U.S. automakers and their suppliers, one analyst said.
Tokyo-based Toyota expects to sell 9.36 million cars and trucks in 2007 and says sales should increase 5.2 percent to 9.85 million in 2008, a spokesman confirmed Thursday. Detroit-based General Motors expects to sell roughly 9.2 million vehicles in 2007 and hasn't disclosed figures for 2008, according to press and wire reports.....
