BlueScope forming vertical chain to fuel growth Finan

An expanded North American presence for Australia's BlueScope Steel Ltd. would provide a strong platform for growth, a top executive at the Australian company's Butler Manufacturing Co. subsidiary said in an interview with AMM.

It's too early to disclose any specific expansion plans, Patrick J. Finan, president of Kansas City, Mo.-based Butler Manufacturing, said. But the Australian steelmaker will focus in the short term on supplying more substrate to its existing and newly acquired business, he said.

"There is a tremendous amount of leverage in the vertical supply chain—from hot-rolled coil from Australia all the way through the building products in North America," Finan said.

BlueScope is also a partner in flat-rolled producer North Star BlueScope Steel Co., Delta, Ohio.

With its recently announced $730-million acquisition of Imsa Steel Corp. from Ternium SA (AMM, Dec. 21), BlueScope is set to add four more companies to its North American portfolio Steelscape Inc., ASC Profiles Inc., Varco Pruden Buildings Inc. and Metl-Span LLC.....
