Iron, steel foundries must vouch for shredders’ removal of toxins

Several hundred iron and steel foundries, should they be users of shredded scrap from motor vehicles, will have to begin vouching for the removal of hazardous contaminants by shredders and dismantlers supplying that material.
A final ruling by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the subject, due out in the Jan. 2 Federal Register, will have a Jan. 2, 2009, effective date for most of the requirements.
The EPA imposed such requirements on 80 of the largest foundries several years ago. However, a federal court, responding to a Sierra Club lawsuit, later held that current laws require smaller foundries to be covered as well.....
