Scrap exports reach record $858M in August

Scrap metal exports hit a new high of $858 million in August, though the accomplishment wasn't enough to prevent a record U.S. trade deficit that month.

That tally exceeded the previous peak of $835 million, set in June, by 3 percent, according to figures released Thursday by the Commerce Department.

The narrower category of copper and brass scrap also hit a record, $239 million, 23 percent above the previous peak of $194 million, also set in June.....
