Turkey, Egypt buys lift No. 1 heavy melt scrap exports

Exports of No. 1 heavy melting steel scrap rose by more than 14 percent in August, spurred by strong demand from Turkey and Egypt.

Shipments of this bellwether grade of cut ferrous scrap rose to 247,082 tonnes in August from 216,207 tonnes in July, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Commerce Department.

The August tonnage was the highest one-month total for U.S. exporters thus far in 2006. Still, shipments of 1,667,130 tonnes for the first eight months of this year lag the 2,065,530-tonne pace seen in the like period last year by 19.3 percent.....
