Nearly half of Ford’s union workers accept buyouts or early retirement

Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich., said 38,000 workers, or almost half of the 83,000 United Auto Workers union employees it started with in 2006, have accepted preliminary buyout offers in a company-wide enrollment that wrapped up Monday.

The total includes 8,000 workers who had accepted buyout or early retirement offers earlier in the year, when the company targeted plant-by-plant work force cuts. The company said in September it was planning to cut its North American....
