Jeff Purvis takes driver’s seat in scrap business’ drive for dock

Former Nascar driver Jeff Purvis has given up the fast lane for a full-time commitment at his scrap metals yard in Clarksville, Tenn., but he is eyeing alternative transportation—the river barge.
Purvis and his partners at Queen City Metals Inc. are looking to establish a dock on the Cumberland River near Clarksville, a small city about 40 miles northwest of Nashville, to ship industrial steel scrap to mini-mills located along the water.
But some local landowners are not ready to wave the checkered flag for his plan. According to a local news report, about 150 have signed a petition to protest Queen City Metals' request that a 34-acre site be rezoned for light industrial use, which would allow the operation of a barge port. Residents are concerned about the possible environmental impact on the river's floodplain and trucks traveling through the neighborhood.....
