January stainless surcharge to dip, but less than thought

Dec 05, 2006 | 01:51 PM | Maria Guzzo

Stainless steel buyers will pay a little less in January, with surcharges on flat-rolled material poised to fall—although perhaps not as much as anticipated.

The nation's three main stainless mills—Allegheny Technologies Inc. (ATI), Pittsburgh; AK Steel Corp., Middletown, Ohio; and North American Stainless Inc. (NAS), Ghent, Ky.—are posting declines ranging from a little more than 2 cents a pound to well over 3 cents on the more popular items.

For Type 304, ATI's surcharge will be $1.3141 a pound for January, down 2.28 cents from $1.3369 this month; AK Steel's surcharge will be $1.3047 a pound, a 2.48-cent reduction from $1.3295; and NAS' surcharge will be $1.2993 a pound, down 3.03 cents from $1.3296.....
