Alcan takes full control of French business

Alcan Inc., Montreal, has consolidated its ownership of France's Carbone Savoie by completing the purchase of the 70-percent stake it did not hold from GrafTech International Ltd. for $135 million less certain price adjustments.
The move is a vertical integration of sorts, because Alcan's proprietary AP smelting technology uses advanced graphitized cathode blocks from Carbone Savoie. Alcan said Oct. 19 that it intended to acquire full control of....
