Gary coke oven emissions cost U.S. Steel $4M

An agreement to resolve an enforcement case for coke oven battery emissions at U.S. Steel Corp.'s Gary (Ind.) Works will cost the company more than $4 million.
The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker will undertake environmental projects valued at $3.67 million and pay about $571,400 in penalties to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM),
The agreement resolves numerous pending enforcement cases and addresses two significant regulatory issues, said Thomas W. Easterly, IDEM commissioner. It also provides specific guidance for monitoring and controlling coke oven emissions and provides a specific plan for IDEM and U.S. Steel to work together to determine if the facility is contributing to poor air quality in the area.....
