Contract talks resuming at Alcan smelter

Dec 11, 2006 | 03:57 AM | Matthew Lerner

Contract negotiations at Alcan Inc.'s aluminum smelter in Alma , Quebec, were set to resume Monday after a Labour Ministry conciliator called the company and union back to the bargaining table, according to Michel Arsenault, United Steelworkers union District 5 director.

The parties did not meet Friday as planned, according to Arsenault. Talks had broken down earlier last week.

While the union and company still disagree on staffing and wage issues, Arsenault said he was hopeful that a resolution could be reached before the current contract expires. "We are still working to tackle a deal by Dec. 31," he said. "We will be having intense negotiations this week and next week."....
