ThyssenKrupp AG, Düsseldorf, Germany, has awarded a contract for the modernization of its Beeckerwerth hot strip mill to SMS Demag AG, Düsseldorf.

The financial terms were not disclosed, but the project is part of ThyssenKrupp's 400-million-euro ($523-million) plan to increase capacity and modernize machinery in order to cope with the extra slab that will arrive in Germany when its jointly owned Brazilian steel mill, Cia. Siderurgica do Atlantico (CSA), begins production in 2008.

ThyssenKrupp hopes to improve annual capacity at the Beeckerwerth mill and expand its product range to include high-strength steels and pipe grades. The mill currently has the capacity to roll roughly 5.4 million tonnes per year. This figure will increase following the completion of work in 2008, but ThyssenKrupp has yet to confirm the rolling mill's future capacity.....
