Lamy ties fate of Doha talks to trade authority renewal

Doha is dead, but the World Trade Organization is not ready to yank it off life support yet.
The latest evidence that rigor mortis is setting in came Monday when Pascal Lamy, WTO director-general, said an extension of President Bush's trade promotion authority is essential for the Doha Round's success.
That authority expires in June 2007 and is unlikely to be renewed by the Democratic-controlled Congress that comes to power in January.
Lamy tried to put the best face on the prospects for the current round of world trade talks, saying in an interview that the WTO is working diligently to bring key members back to the bargaining table.....
