Lamy links Doha fate to unlikely renewal of trade authority

Doha is dead, but the World Trade Organization is not quite ready to yank it off life support.
The latest evidence that rigor mortis is setting in came Monday when Pascal Lamy, WTO director-general, said that an extension of President Bush's trade promotion authority is essential for the Doha Round's success. That authority expires in June 2007 and is unlikely to be renewed by the Democrat-controlled Congress that comes to power in January.
Lamy tried to put the best face on the prospects for the current round of world trade talks, saying in an interview that the WTO is working diligently to bring key members back to the bargaining table. But asked directly if he was concerned that Bush's trade promotion authority would not be renewed, Lamy could only say "yes."....
