Mittal Steel seeking more layoffs at Sparrows Point

Mittal Steel Co. NV, Rotterdam, has offered workers a new round of temporary five-week "voluntary" layoffs at its large Sparrows Point, Md., plant, in another sign of a deteriorating steel market.
The voluntary layoffs were offered to hundreds of workers at Sparrows Point, which has a total work force of 2,400, union officials said.
It marks the third round of voluntary layoffs this year. About 200 workers signed up for the layoffs in each of the first two rounds. The company had previously disclosed a round of voluntary layoffs starting Oct. 15, but had not revealed how many workers had chosen that option.....
