Mittal eyeing more layoffs at Sparrows Point

In another sign of a deteriorating U.S. steel market, Mittal Steel Co. NV, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, has offered a new round of temporary five-week voluntary layoffs to workers at its large Sparrows Point, Md., plant.

The voluntary layoffs have been offered to hundreds of workers at Sparrows Point, which has a total work force of 2,400, union officials said.

It marks the third round of voluntary layoffs this year. About 200 workers signed up for the layoffs in each of the first two rounds. The company previously disclosed a round of voluntary layoffs starting Oct. 15, but had not revealed how many workers had chosen that option.....
