Brazil steel sector seeks return of tariffs

Brazil's steel sector will start lobbying the government for a reinstatement of import duties on 15 types of steel products whose tariffs were cut to zero in 2005, according to Instituto Brasileiro de Siderúrgia (IBS) officials.
The decision follows a "substantial increase in import levels in Brazil this year," Marco Polo de Mello Lopes, IBS' vice president, said. "We're going to hold talks on this with the government at the start of the New Year. The difficulties regarding imports are growing."
The government axed import duties on 15 widely used products, including hot- and cold-rolled coil and reinforcing bar, to encourage growth in Brazil's automotive and construction industries. Brazilian automakers had complained that steel was in short supply following a surge in domestic market demand in 2004.....
