Stainless market facing 10¢/lb. surcharge hike

Stainless flat-rolled steel product buyers could be facing a 10-cent-a-pound surcharge increase come February.

Nickel's price surge in the first two-thirds of December means the February surcharge, which is based on December raw material prices, could be up 8 to 10 cents from January levels, sources said. January's stainless flat alloy surcharge had fallen around 3 cents from December, depending on product.

"Someone said it would go higher, but I think it will go up a dime," one Midwest service center manager said, adding that nickel dipped a bit Thursday off its highs.....
