Copper producer Asarco LLC said Friday that it had reached a tentative agreement with the United Steelworkers union leaders for a new contract covering hourly workers at its southwestern U.S. facilities.

Details of the contract were not immediately available, but the company noted that it was still subject to official approval by the union's bargaining committee, ratification by the membership and an OK from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court handling its restructuring.

It followed news Thursday that Asarco had agreed with the union to extend the current contract, which was set to expire Dec 31 (AMM, Dec. 29).....
