CVRD to expand bauxite, alumina capacities

Brazil's Cia. Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) plans to invest more than $1.04 billion to increase bauxite and alumina production.

The plan includes investments of $196.1 million for the development of the second phase of CVRD's Paragominas bauxite mine and $846 million for the expansion of the Alumina do Norte do Brasil SA (Alunorte) alumina refinery, in which CVRD is the controlling partner.

Alunorte's stage 6 and stage 7 will each have a capacity of 935,000 tonnes of alumina per year, boosting the refinery's total production capacity to 6.26 million tonnes per year-making CVRD one of the world's three largest alumina producers by the end of the decade. Startup of both stages is expected in the second quarter of 2008.....
