Ameristeel secures labor deals at 2 facilities

Gerdau Ameristeel Corp., Tampa, Fla., has reached labor agreements covering a small number of workers at two of its operations, but is still working toward agreements with hourly employees at three of its steel plants.
The company said this week it had secured a four-year labor contract covering 12 employees represented by the United Steelworkers union at shredder operations in Wilton, Iowa, and a three-year contract covering 50 workers represented by the Teamsters union at a wire production facility in Memphis, Tenn.
The two new agreements, combined with another recent contract covering USW-represented workers at a steel bar plant in Cambridge, Ontario, are three of six similar agreements the company has reached with workers at various operations this year.Gerdau Ameristeel remains in negotiations with the USW for new labor contracts for locked-out workers at a wire rod manufacturing plant in Beaumont, Texas, and for workers at steel bar manufacturing facilities in St. Paul, Minn., and Wilton....
