Uncovering the latest in eco-efficient auto and industrial coatings

As the coil coating industry continues to evolve with new developments like near-infrared ovens to cure coatings and roller units for on-the-fly color changes, so too have the companies that make the coatings or paints.
BASF Corp., Southfield, Mich., one of the more-innovative non-coaters, introduced "cool coatings" to the metal construction industry in 2001 with the launch of its Ultra-Cool coatings system for metal roofs.
Cool coatings increase the reflectivity of medium and darker colors used in exterior construction applications, particularly metal roofing, thereby reducing the energy needed for cooling. In addition to saving energy, these "cool roof" applications help mitigate a phenomenon known as "urban heat island effect," a common occurrence in built-up areas that contributes to air pollution.
As a result, cool coating technology has been well received by both the construction industry and government and regulatory bodies, said Tom McKay, BASF's product and marketing manager for industrial coatings solutions.....
