Plan to relocate scrapyards gets mixed reviews

The latest plan by the city government in Portland, Maine, to move two scrapyards out of a redevelopment area has one of the companies supportive but the other skeptical.

An older relocation proposal, now discarded, would have earmarked a defunct 13-acre quarry for use by a branch yard of New England Metal Recycling LLC and the operations of E. Perry Iron & Metal Co.

The new plan calls for 53 acres now owned by a tree services company to be divided among New England Metal, E. Perry, the city's public works department and the Trust for Public Land.....
