Alcan, Alcoa World Alumina sign 1.5M-tonne Guinea refinery deal

Alcan Inc. and Alcoa World Alumina LLC have signed a basic agreement with the government of the Republic of Guinea for the development of a 1.5-million-tonne-per-year alumina refinery in the West African country.
The agreement lays down the framework for the smelter project. It includes an ownership structure that calls for Montreal-based Alcan and Alcoa World Alumina, which is a joint venture between Pittsburgh-based Alcoa and Alumina Ltd. of Australia, to hold a combined stake of at least 80 percent.
