Newmont not ruling out Placer Dome bid

Newmont Mining Corp., Denver, is considering making an offer for Placer Dome Inc. after the Vancouver, British Columbia,-based company rejected a $9.2-billion takeover bid from Barrick Gold Corp., Toronto.
"It would be fair to say that we are thinking about (a bid)," Pierre Lassonde, Newmont's president, said on Australian television Sunday in comments later confirmed by a Newmont spokesman. Lassonde was in Australia for the Newmont stakeholders dinner in Adelaide.
However, there are several reasons why Newmont might decide not to participate, Lassonde said in the television interview, notably because Placer Dome's assets might not properly complement Newmont's existing mines,....
