Joseph C. Newcomer, 88, a dairy farmer, machinist and pioneer in the tungsten carbide industry, where he logged more than 70 years of continuous service, has died in Latrobe, Pa.
Newcomer began his career in tungsten carbide in 1936, when he worked for Philip McKenna in the research laboratory at Vanadium Alloys Steel Corp., now known as ATI Allvac, a unit of Allegheny Technologies Inc. Three years later, when McKenna formed McKenna Metals Co., now....
