Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd. (Chalco) has started construction of a 200,000-tonne-per-year secondary smelter in Shandong province.

The smelter in a suburb of the port city of Qingdao will be built in two phases of 100,000 tonnes each, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said. The first phase will require an investment of 1 billion yuan ($124 million).

The NDRC did not indicate when the smelter is scheduled to be commissioned, but a typical 100,000-tonne-a-year smelter should take about a year to construct, according to an official with the metal recycling branch of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA).....
