Alcan effort to sell smelter ends without deal

Discussions with a consortium about the possible sale of Alcan Inc.'s smelter in Steg, Switzerland, has ended without a deal.

Montreal-based Alcan said Tuesday that after in-depth discussions with the group led by Albert Bass, the parties concluded that a proposed sale of the 44,000-tonne-per-year smelter was uneconomic and would not ensure the plant's future sustainability.

"After very constructive discussions, both parties agreed that the proposed potential sale transaction does not present a viable solution for the primary metal and anode production at Steg," Wolfgang Stiller, president of Alcan Primary Metal Group, North Europe, said.....
