E-cycling systems are not an environmental issue, EPA tells GAO

An arm of Congress says the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency should be proposing options to Congress for overcoming the factors deterring the recycling and reuse of discarded electronics.

And the EPA's response to the Government Accountability Office (GAO)? No thank you.

"The EPA is not in the best position to choose between competing financing solutions, given that this decision is one that is fundamentally a business and economic issue rather than an environmental issue," Thomas Dunne, an acting assistant administrator at the agency, wrote in reply.

The GAO report describes competing proposals for financing electronic recycling, given that the value of the residual substances generally is not enough to cover collection and processing costs.....
