Shredded exports below par despite Oct. gain

Exports of shredded scrap took the low road again in October, the second month in a row in which the tonnage of the fragmented scrap shipped to foreign steelmakers and foundries has been about half the level seen earlier in the year.
While shipments inched up 5 percent to 218,563 tonnes in October from the 208,185 tonnes exported in September, both months were well below the 360,000-tonne-a-month pace that had prevailed for much of the year, according to data from the U.S. Commerce Department.
The slower overall pace reflects a general decline in shipments to China, the major overseas market for U.S. ferrous scrap exporters, but there are also fewer buyers elsewhere in the Pacific Rim.....
