AK plans $8.5M plant to make large-diameter stainless tube for trucks

New truck emissions standards are driving AK Steel Corp., Middletown, Ohio, in a new direction.
The company said it plans to invest $8.5 million to manufacture large-diameter stainless tubing, which it doesn't currently produce.
Through its AK Tube LLC subsidiary in Walbridge, Ohio, the company will build a new production facility that will include a resistance-weld tube mill and associated equipment capable of producing large-diameter stainless tubing to meet new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards that become effective Jan. 1, 2007.
The company hasn't yet decided where the new production facility will be located, an AK Steel spokesman said. Candidates include AK Tube's Walbridge headquarters, which also manufactures carbon and coated carbon tube, and its Columbus, Ind., facility, which manufactures stainless tube.....
