Senate rejection of Arctic oil drilling called upset for steel interests

The Senate's rejection of a plan to allow drilling for oil and natural gas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is being called a loss for the U.S. steel industry.
The Senate's decision to cut the ANWR drilling provision out of the Defense Department Appropriations Act of 2006 was a disappointment to the American Iron and Steel Institute, Washington, which said it would have been a first step in opening up new sources of energy for America.
"As a result of this failure, America will remain dependent on foreign sources of energy and domestic manufacturing jobs will be at the mercy of tight supply and high prices. As we head into winter and Americans face skyrocketing home heating costs, it is also a time when the cost of not having a plan to access new sources of energy will be painfully apparent," Andrew Sharkey III, AISI's president, said.....
