Newmont's profits up 12.5% in qtr. on higher metal prices

Newmont Mining Corp., Denver, posted a 12.5-percent gain in third-quarter net income on sales that rose 32 percent on the back of higher metals prices.
Net income during the quarter totaled $128.7 million on sales of nearly $1.2 billion compared with earnings of $114.4 million on sales of $881.2 million in the third quarter of 2003.
The company sold 1.73 million equity ounces of gold during the third quarter, down 16 percent from the year-earlier quarter.....
