Higher copper prices and lower production costs helped Phelps Dodge Corp., Phoenix, post third-quarter net income of $292.9 million on sales that rose 79.1 percent to nearly $1.9 billion in contrast to a $300,000 net loss on sales of $1.03 billion in the year-earlier quarter.The company's Phelps Dodge Mining Co. division doubled sales to $1.42 billion in the latest three-month period from $704.1 million in the third quarter of 2003.....
