Stelco Inc., Hamilton, Ontario, is deep into negotiations aimed at securing a new labor contract with one of its union locals, a deal that could help ensure continuing supply arrangements with two major automotive customers.

Courtney Pratt, Stelco's president and chief executive officer, said during a conference call with analysts this week that talks on a new labor contract with United Steelworkers union Local 8782 were continuing.

Pratt declined to offer any specific details about the talks, but he hinted that things were progressing well. "We continue to bargain," he said this week. "I think both sides want to come to an agreement. Negotiations took place over the weekend and are continuing. We hope to have something to say as the week unfolds."....
