Wheeling-Pitt eyes EF start ahead of schedule

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., Wheeling, W.Va., is ramping up activity related to the new electric furnace at its Mingo Junction, Ohio, plant with an eye toward striking the arc on the EF by the end of this month.
If successful, Wheeling-Pittsburgh would beat a self-imposed deadline for startup of the $120-million project, which it originally planned for early December.
The startup of the EF will put Wheeling-Pittsburgh, which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August 2003, on a new growth path. It will allow the company to sell coke on the spot market, opening a new revenue source.....
