U.S. Steel to remedy Thomson plant pollution

U.S. Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, and MultiServ, a division of Harsco Corp., Harrisburg, Pa., have agreed to make about $300,000 worth of improvements to the slag-handling area at the steelmaking giant's Edgar Thomson plant in Braddock, Pa., in order to reduce emissions.
A recent study by the Allegheny Health Department determined that ash containing oxides of magnesium, iron, calcium and aluminum was released into the air when the slag was dumped into quenching pools. According to the health department, U.S. Steel has been cited three times for releasing visible emissions from the slag-handling process.....
