Europe red tape said leading aluminum scrap to collapse

The European secondary aluminum industry faces collapse as scrap recyclers suffer under an increasing weight of red tape and insatiable demand for raw materials from East Asia and India, secondary alloy producers said.
Amedeo Alti, president of Associazione Italiana Raffinatori Alluminio (Assiral), Italy's aluminum industry association, called on European governments not to penalize scrap by treating it as generic waste, thus causing problems for recyclers.
"All politicians in Europe must realize that scrap is not waste but a very important strategic material," he said at Metal Bulletin's 12th International Secondary Aluminium Conference in Milan. "If we lose control of the scrap market, there is a possibility we will have a catastrophe in the next few years."....
