W-P furnace completes 1st heat ahead of plan

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., Wheeling, W.Va., said the new electric-arc furnace (EF) at its Mingo Junction, Ohio, plant completed its first heat Sunday, less than 16 months after the project was launched.
The successful heat beat a self-imposed deadline of early December for the start-up of the $120-million project.....
