USS plant, neighbors fail particulate standards

U.S. Steel Corp.'s Clairton (Pa.) Works and several communities surrounding the plant have failed to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's PM 2.5 standards for very fine particulate matter.
As a result, Clairton and four neighboring communities will be regarded as a separate sub-county non-attainment area.
"That's an area that is influenced to a large degree by a local source, the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works," an Allegheny County Health Department spokesman said. "We will be developing two separate implementation plans, one for the county and one for that particular area that will be focused more on the local sources that influence air quality in that area."....
