William W. Gustafson, retired head of U.S. Steel International, dies at 77

William Walter Gustafson, who rose from a salesman at U.S. Steel Corp. to president of U.S. Steel International during a 30-year career, died in Pasadena, Calif., following a 10-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 77.

Gustafson was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., and raised in Aurora, Ill. In 1944, after graduating from West Aurora High School, where he was an all-state halfback, Gustafson attended Northwestern University before receiving an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy.....
