Indian metals plants ride out tsunami's rage

India's major metallurgical operations were left intact by the tsunami that devastated the nation's southern coast early Dec. 26 and left more than 10,000 dead.
Hindustan Zinc Ltd.'s smelter reportedly was unaffected, along with Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd.'s copper smelter at Tuticorin. "Neither our plant nor the jetty has been impacted by the tidal wave," a Sterlite spokesman said.
Vizag Steel, located in Andhra Pradesh, also was intact. "We were fortunate," said company chairman Shivsagar Rao.....
