No restocking in auto, aero markets despite low levels

Restocking hasn't yet started in the automotive and aerospace industries even though inventory levels are extremely low, delegates at the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) convention in San Diego heard.

The first sign that restocking has started will come when lead times increase and companies need to have material on hand to keep up with higher demand rather than buying on a hand-to-mouth basis, as seen over the past year.

"We've seen the end of destocking in the automotive supply chain. We've not yet seen restocking, although stocks in the supply chain are very low," Jack A. Hockema, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Foothill Ranch, Calif.-based Kaiser Aluminum Corp., told delegates.....
