Industry cautious on new ATI titanium alloy

Allegheny Technologies Inc. (ATI) is banking on a new proprietary alloy to serve as a substitute to the aerospace industry's workhorse titanium 6-4 (6 aluminum-4 vanadium) alloy, although industry sources remain cautious.
The greatest potential for the new alloy, ATI Titanium 425 (4Aluminum-2.5Vanadium-1.5 Iron-0.25O Oxygen), appears to be in sheet and plate, but also possibly fasteners, L. Patrick Hassey, ATI's chairman and chief executive officer, said, describing the alloy as the first high-strength titanium alloy "that is cold rollable and cold formable," attributes that could significantly cut the final cost of parts production.....
