AMM Steel Raw Materials Strategies conference Nat gas key as demand grows for alternative forms of iron making

Growth in steel demand from emerging economies worldwide, particularly Asia, is driving the need for improved energy efficiency in steel and iron making, turning the spotlight on the value—and validity—of alternate forms of manufacturing iron. And natural gas is expected to factor into this significantly.

Asia "is driving the bus in terms of world steel demand," John Kopfle, director of corporate development at Charlotte, N.C.-based Midrex Technologies Inc., told attendees at AMM's Steel Raw Materials Strategies Conference in Minneapolis this week, noting that China, South Korea and India in the first seven months of this year have seen steel production rise while other regions of the world, notably North America, have logged declines.....
