First national standards targeting GHGs, truck fuel efficiency debuts

The first national standards to cut greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and improve the fuel efficiency of heavy-duty trucks and buses were announced Monday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The nationwide program is projected to reduce GHGs by nearly 250 million tonnes and save 500 million barrels of oil over the lives of the vehicles produced within the program's first five years.
The new standards proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the Transportation Department and the EPA cover three categories of heavy trucks....
