‘We’ve lost a lot of drivers’ fears mount about new trucking rules

New safety rules and ranking methods for trucking companies and drivers that come into effect in December will cause driver shortages and increase trucking rates, according to market participants.

A driver shortage is looming and better drivers will come at a premium, forcing companies to pass on the extra costs.

New transportation measures which raise qualification standards for drivers could force 15 to 20 percent of qualified drivers out of their jobs, Philip Bedwell, rail and barge transportation manager at recycler OmniSource Corp., estimated.

"The qualifications for new drivers are much stricter and we will not be able to add new drivers at the same pace as we will lose them," he said. "Some of those drivers are being disqualified by the program right now, so that is giving us a little time to replace them."....
