Detective assigned to scrap beat as city mulls ordinance

Springfield, Mo., is taking a proactive approach to dealing with scrap metal theft, assigning a police officer to a scrap beat as well as starting to draft legislation.
Katherine Dunnegan, a detective in the Springfield Police Department's Criminal Investigations Section Property Unit, has been designated to handle all metal-related thefts. "Metals theft has been a problem here for some time, and with the economy so bad it has taken an extreme jump, with several industrial air conditioner thefts and appliances....
